Jennifer Lopez is giving new meaning to the word "knockout" on the cover of V magazine. Wearing nothing but men's boxing gear, the America Idol judge looks sexy and powerful in a photo shoot for the magazine's sports issue. But that fierce look she's giving the camera is more than a pose; Lopez studied boxing and self-defense for her films Money Train and Enough.
"I know how to fight!" Lopez tells the magazine. "I've always felt like a tough girl from the Bronx, but I have a soft core."
That combination has done well lately for Lopez, 42. On top of Idol, she's got her hit talent competition Q'Viva, created in collaboration with with estranged husband Marc Anthony. The exes, who separated last July, also worked together on a clothing line for Kohl's -- which has been successful, unlike Lopez's disappointing 2001 fashion line.
"That was sad for me," she says of her earlier fashion endeavor. "I just felt like I never got a fair chance to do it right. And on top of it, I felt like I was trapped in a situation I couldn't get out of, and my name was stamped on things that I didn't believe in."
As a woman who does it all, Lopez knows that she can't always do things perfectly. Not so long ago, she had a run of less-than-successful albums (Rebirth, Brave) and changed record labels, leading to rumors that Epic Records had dropped her for underperforming. She also hasn't had a hit film since 2005's Monster-in-Law.
"You're not going to hit the target or the bull's-eye every time. That's part of it," she explains to V. "At the end of the day, I made those choices. I've been in the business now, I don't want to say how many years. You have amazing moments of recognition and success. But at this point in my life, I try to take it all with a grain of salt."
And that's where the idea of boxing takes on a special meaning for Lopez, who considers herself a survivor through it all.
"I can take a lot of punches and still keep going," she brags. "I've been trained like a boxer to go 15 rounds."
Lucky for fellow American Idol judge Steven Tyler that J.Lo is able to keep her pugilistic tendencies in check. During Tuesday night's episode of the show, Tyler poked fun at Lopez for her purported nip slip at Sunday's Oscars -- but, nice girl that she is, J.Lo let the Aerosmith singer keep his teeth... and his dignity (watch the clip below). Still, Steven might want to want to watch his step; we've got a feeling he'd have a tough time lasting 15 round with Jenny from the Block.
