When Jennifer Lopez and husband of seven years Marc Anthony announced on July 15 that they were splitting up, they released a joint statement saying, "We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters." However, a source close to the couple tells People that the split was far from friendly. In fact, Lopez, 41, and Anthony, 42, had been arguing "nonstop" for months, over issues ranging from Anthony's jealousy of Lopez's career to J.Lo's fears that her husband had been unfaithful.
There are rumors that Lopez's gig as a judge on American Idol caused strife, despite the fact that the two performed together on the show just two months ago. It is also believed that Anthony is a "control freak," and Lopez finally got fed up buckling to his demands. There were arguments over where they should live, and arguments over Guadalupe Lopez (Lopez's mother) coming to live with them.
Another source tells Us Weekly that infidelity -- including an alleged 2009 tryst between Anthony and a flight attendant -- played a major role in the split. "It was a very bad marriage, and Jennifer got the courage to end things," says the source. "(Marc) was a terrible husband."
Another insider, however, diputes the adultery claims, telling People: "They started to see life differently." And the same source feels that the breakup is for the best. "Though they love, admire and respect each other very much," says the insider. "They just needed to be apart."
In an interesting twist, Lopez's ex Ben Affleck reportedly sent his support to Lopez, via Lopez's mother, only days before news of the split broke. According to Us Weekly, Guadalupe Lopez reached out to Affleck via email because "she wanted advice for Jennifer." The source adds, "(Guadalupe) always liked and trusted him. (Ben) replied back on email, wished her well and offered what he could."
Whatever caused the breakup, Lopez is reportedly "devastated." According to an insider, Lopez was was "patient and loving and did everything (Anthony) wanted her to. She exhausted all the possibilities."
