MTV's commercials for Jersey Shore, Season 2 (Thursday, 10 p.m. ET) come with a clever tagline: "New Shore. Same Crazy." In each ad, MTV shows snippets of the "crazy" it's referring to: drunken fistfights, three-way make-out sessions, girls licking guy's hairy navels, hot hot hot tub action, and blackout sex.
Here we go again—only this time, it's in Miami. You ask yourself why you watch this stuff, but of course you already know the answer. No matter how clueless or petty or sorely misguided you are, these people are worse than you. Way worse.
You would never lean into another person's face and scream at the top of your lungs, or throw punches at her, or drag her, by her hair, to the ground. In brains and moral character and fashion sense, you are superior to these people—who do all those things in front of TV cameras.
But let's face it: the "new-shore-same-crazy" idea is also a little disingenuous. Snooki, The Situation and the rest are celebrities now. When they step foot outside, they are trailed by paparazzi, or at least mobbed by autograph seekers. Talk show booking agents seek them out, and other hangers on who see an opportunity to benefit from their money-making power. MTV producers no doubt told them that in Season 2, they must be even more contentious, more promiscuous, more outrageously knuckle-headed.
With all the people that the cast members are now required to please, the new Shore can't possible be the same crazy. It's a more calculated, more desperate crazy. And viewers will get to feel even more superior. Lucky us!
