Jessica Simpson is thrilled to be engaged -- but she's not exactly running to the altar. The singer, 30, says she was taken by surprise when her former NFL player boyfriend Eric Johnson proposed in November. But with her busy schedule promoting her new holiday album Happy Christmas and preparing for her live performance on Tuesday night's Christmas in Rockefeller Center. Simpson says she has zero time for picking colors or trying on dresses.
"We have not started planning. I'm trying to get through all this promotion," the singer-actress tells People.
And when she says they haven't started, she means it -- they haven't even picked a date!
"I have not set a date and I can't even think about putting together like table settings and all that," she says. Although they don't have a time picked out, Simpson says she's "pretty sure" they'll "hopefully" be married by "next Christmas."
"We're just going to enjoy the engagement and we'll get married the moment we feel like it," says Simpson.
Hmm -- does that mean the singer is planning on eloping? Maybe not, but she does say that she wants the wedding to be "simple." Since her first wedding to Nick Lachey in 2002 was famously ornate and formal, we imagine she'd want to go in a different direction this time. Simpson seems like a pretty fun and laid-back girl, so we think something casually elegant would be more her style anyhow!
In the meantime, she and Johnson are figuring out the compromises of being a couple: she cooked her health-obsessed fiance a vegan Thanksgiving ("I attempted," she laughs), and they're figuring how to split up their Christmas between his family in Boston and hers in Texas.
"I honestly feel every day is a romantic day with him," she gushes. "He even said (earlier) to my mom and my friend, 'I can't even believe that's my fiancée.' My mom's heart was melting." Aww!
