Making a Mama: Why Jessica Simpson's Pregnancy Weight Gain Scares Me

I love that Jessica Simpson is rocking a realistically pregnant body, but I'm also terrified by it. I'm just 16 weeks in and my midwife just gave me the "slow down on the pregnancy weight gain" talk.

It turns out, I had packed on about 8 pounds since my previous appointment a month before. The average recommended weight gain for pregnancy is 25 to 35 pounds, and my midwife says that to stay on track, it would be great if I didn't gain any more weight until my next appointment on April 5.

I've never really struggled with my weight -- except for a brief post-college beer and cupcake era that tipped the scales at my record high. So I never dreamed it would be a problem during pregnancy. The trouble is, my first trimester left me feeling sluggish and sick. I swapped my usual gym sessions for nap sessions, eliminating the normal calorie burning that kept my weight in check.

My typical eating habits changed, too. Salads, my favorite lunch food, no longer sounded good. I craved carbs -- sandwiches, mac 'n' cheese, bagels -- anything but greens. Now in my second trimester, I'm back to eating healthy foods again, but I'm so hungry all the time I end up eating double portions. On more than one occasion, I've found myself eating breakfast number four at 10:30am! I've tried everything from high-fiber cereal to protein to fruits, but sometimes no matter what or how much I eat, my stomach rumbles incessantly. Thanks, Baby!

At this point, I've stopped looking at the scale. And I can't say I share Jessica Simpson's declaration of being more comfortable in her own skin during pregnancy than ever before. (I am so not posing nude on the cover of Elle.) And right now my bump feels like more chub than big beautiful baby. But I have been dutifully trying to cut back on the extra calories and I've felt energetic enough to go back to the gym to try to even things out. I know that my eating habits now can influence my baby's health so that's my motivation. Here's hoping I pass the weigh in at my next appointment!
