The Franklin family, made up of mom, Amy; dad, Todd; 9-year-old Lily and 7-year-old Chloe weren't expecting to see Jillian Michaels on their family room sofa. Amy thought she had gotten her weight under control when she underwent gastric bypass surgery a few years ago. But when her business failed, she took a downward spiral falling back into old ways and picked up a smoking habit. But her husband, Todd, shouldn't have been surprised. He uses a sleep apnea machine at night because he stops breathing multiple times in one night; and if he’s not sleeping, he’s in front of the refrigerator shamefully eating salami and matzah with tons of butter. It’s no wonder Amy panicked when finding Jillian snooping around in her home seeing their piles of junk food and cartons of cigarettes. But it turns out, Amy wasn’t the biggest problem.
For the first few days of the week, Todd kept quitting. He tried to pick fights with Jillian and rebelled against her. And for the first time this season, she couldn’t intimidate him into changing. When Jillian tried to get to the bottom of their issues, she finds that Amy is holding a lot of resentment for her husband and there were a lot going unsaid between the two. Amy had been walking on egg shells trying not to set him off, but felt he was the reason she fell off the wagon because he didn’t want to join in her healthy life. And Todd’s late night munchie habit was continuing to sabotage his weight-loss efforts as Jillian found him at midnight grazing the kitchen for whatever he could put in his mouth.
After cleaning out their refrigerator and pantry, Jillian made convinced Amy to promise her daughters that she would quit smoking. They buried her last cigarette as a family. Later, Jillian went to the bowling alley with Todd and his friends to see if she could try and build a support group for him. Little did she know, that they had all been trying to motivate him and get him to change his ways for years. It was very puzzling to Jillian.
Jillian then took the couple to a boxing ring where they could talk over a nice round in the ring. Though they were throwing punches, it seemed to be a great way to get all of their problems on the table. Amy gave Todd an ultimatum, "I’m leaving you if you don't change." If that wasn't inspiration enough for him, the couple had their close friends over for dinner. The popular topic of conversation was how no one wanted to see Todd die. It was a stark realization for Todd, but by the end of the meal everyone was in tears and Todd began to understand he would have to change his ways.
The next day, Todd took the initiative and called his friend to go swimming. If we doubted it in the beginning of the episode, Jillian proves she can tackle any bull. Amy got back into her old yoga routine and was in high spirits. Six weeks later, Amy and Todd were still headed down the healthy path. Amy quit smoking and lost 17 pounds and Todd stopped using his sleep machine and lost 33. Though it wasn’t a remarkable weight loss, the two got their health and relationship under control.
