Jim Carrey has had an impressive career, spanning comedy, drama, and animation. But there's one thing the actor has never been in a movie: gay. This will change with the release of Carrey's controversial new film, I Love You, Phillip Morris, about a gay con man who falls in love with a fellow prisoner (played by Ewan McGregor). Carrey, 48, had zero problems with playing a flamboyantly gay character (complete with rumored-to-be-explicit sex scenes). In a new interview with Parade, the actor raves about McGregor's kissing skills and swears that his gender was irrelevant.
"[It was] a dream come true," Carrey told Parade when asked about playing McGregor's lover. "I mean, look at the guy. I have to say, he is a great kisser... Actually, you had to put out of your mind your own sexual preference and just try to understand that you were loving another person who just happens to be a guy. It wasn't about male or female, love is love."
Velvet Goldmine (in which he made out with Jonathan Rhys Meyers).
"I like kissing boys on screen," the risk-loving actor told Out earlier this year. "As a straight guy, it’s quite an interesting proposition. Anything on a film set that takes you by surprise like that, that gets your blood up, is good."
So did he have any advice for first-timer Carrey? Just one thing.
"As Ewan said, 'When you're kissing another guy it can get a little prickly,'" recalls Carrey.
I Love You, Phillip Morris is based on the true story of con artist and certified genius Steven Jay Russell, who is currently serving a 144-year jail sentence in Texas. The movie comes to theaters on Friday.
