Joan Rivers has never been afraid to speak her mind -- which you'd think would make her a good talk show guest, right? But the 77-year-old comedienne is claiming that she was booted from an appearance on the FOX News network after making negative comments about Sarah Palin. At a Critic's Choice Awards party this weekend, a TMZ reporter asked Rivers what she thought of people blaming Palin for the Tucson tragedy.
"They're right to blame Sarah for the shootings," she said. "Go look at her website…This woman is just stupid and a threat."
Rivers was referring to a now-infamous map on Palin's website that marked pro-health care Senators -- including Gabrielle Giffords, the target of the Arizona killing spree -- with symbolic shooting targets. The map was already a source of controversy, and Rivers was hardly the first person to call out Palin for her questionable rhetoric. However, Rivers says that Palin -- a Fox News correspondent -- took the comments personally, and managed to get Rivers' scheduled appearance on the morning show Fox and Friends canceled as retaliation.
"When (daughter Melissa Rivers) and I were promoting our new WE reality show, I made a joke about Sarah Palin that was picked up by TMZ," Joan tweeted on Wednesday. "As a result, our appearance on the Fox News Channel tomorrow morning has been canceled. Outcome: DON'T PISS OFF SARAH PALIN. She's apparently 'very powerful,' and is obviously still smarting from the end of her reality show."
FOX denies that they canceled Melissa and Joan's appearance because of Palin, saying that the show was overbooked and they accidentally canceled their appearance instead of rescheduling it. We have no idea how a network would accidentally cancel a guest appearance -- and neither does Joan, who offered to take a lie detector test to prove that her version of the story is the truth.
The weirdest thing about this story, if it's true, is that Sarah Palin felt threatened by a septuagenarian comedian who thrives on being controversial. You'd think she would be concentrating on bigger issues. Or, in Joan's own words: "If Sarah is listening to what (I) say, we're in trouble."
