Look out, Andy Roddick – tennis has a new bad boy, and he goes by the name of Jake Gyllenhaal. Sure, he may not steal your #1 ranking, but he has tear-off pants, drinks while he plays, and isn’t afraid to take a ball to the posterior!
Gyllenhaal’s hilarious tennis cad is one of the highlights of Vampire Weekend’s new video for the song “Giving Up the Gun.” The video follows a female player as she faces off against an increasingly bizarre series of opponents, including a samurai swordsman, identical twins, and even Joe Jonas -- possibly the only person alive who can look emo in a tennis outfit. Music celebs Lil Jon and RZA also make appearances, but Gyllenhaal is definitely the comedic highlight. (Side note: could somebody please cast this guy in a comedy, instead of a heartwrenching drama, for once?) At the end, our heroine has to face her toughest opponent yet: herself.
Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig tells Spinner.com that the video really captures the inspiration for the song: "'Giving Up the Gun' just means turning your back on aggression and selfishness. The heroine of the video isn't an amazing tennis player, but she has heart. She stays calm despite the unfairness of it all."
Watch the video below! For those keeping score, Jonas appears at the 30 second mark, and Gyllenhaal about two minutes in.
