Oh, John Mayer, we hardly knew you. Actually, that's not true -- we knew way, way too much about you. Is that why you decided to become a Twitter quitter?
Mayer, 32, shocked fans on Sunday by abruptly deleting his prolific Twitter account. With 3.1 million fans, the singer was one of the 20 most popular tweeters, edging out Justin Timberlake, Demi Moore and Selena Gomez. So why quit now? We can think of three possible reasons:
1. He never liked Twitter in the first place. Mayer told E! Online last year that Twitter was "inherently silly" and "dumb." But how does that explain his neverending stream of tweets? Mayer claimed he's just an overachiever: "I've always communicated at a high level as best I can." That seems weird, so let's move onto the next theory...
2. He's too busy. This is the official line: Mayer's rep says that he's quitting Twitter because his current tour is over and he'll be focusing on his new record. But he's still updating his blog, his Facebook page, and his official site. So we're leaning toward #3...
3. He's finally decided to stop oversharing. Mayer got himself in serious hot water earlier this year by revealing intimate details about his famous ex-girlfriends -- not to mention using the "n" word and discussing his penis -- in Playboy. Mayer has laid low since then -- except online, where he was tweeting at least once an hour on most days. Since his public image still hasn't fully recovered -- no one wants to listen to sensitive love songs from an insensitive guy! -- stepping back from Twitter may be a very smart move.
Then again, Mayer has said he's now addicted to Tumblr, so maybe he's just swapping one habit with another!
By deleting his account, John Mayer joins famous Twitter-quitters Miley Cyrus and LeAnn Rimes. In case you were wondering, his final tweet was a question: "What does this button do?"
