John Mayer Surprises Us By Respecting Katy Perry's Privacy

The singer finds some humility when talking about his (most recent) ex with Ellen DeGeneres

There was good news and bad news in John Mayer's new interview with Ellen DeGeneres. The good news: he's learning to show more respect for his ex-girlfriends, most recently Katy Perry. The bad news: he still has terrible taste in hats. Watch a clip below!

When provoked by Degeneres, Mayer, 35, opened up about his recent split with Perry (whom he dated for around seven months). Thankfully, he didn't open up too much.

"Listen, it was a very private relationship going in, it was a private relationship during, and it's a private relationship, still," said Mayer. "I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given, but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other. And I've been much happier since then."

Ah, yes, we remember those "previous answers." In 2010, he said sexually explicit (and kind of demeaning) things about ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson, and spilled personal details about his break-up with Jennifer Aniston. Following the backlash, he took some time off, and stopped by Ellen (clearly a favorite destination) to publicly apologize. And yet, he still couldn't resist tearing into Taylor Swift for "humiliating" him with her song "Dear John." (Talk about dishing it but not taking it.)

Fortunately, John seems to actually be taking steps to change. For one thing, he's stopped sharing his every passing thought on Twitter and has taken all the personal stuff off his Tumblr page. For another, he 's given up drinking. And finally, he's moved his Montana-sized ego to actual Montana, where he spends his weekends trying to be a normal person.

"I go out every other weekend if I can, and hang out and I wake up and I get a cup of coffee and throw a ball with the dog, and I work out and I take walks and I wash my own dishes," he gushes of his home by the Yellowstone River. "It's a small town and everyone's been really great to me."

Also great: A John Mayer who doesn't take the bait to spill personal details. Now we'll just have to see if he keeps his commitment to privacy, or if he'll lose his cool when Perry releases her inevitable break-up song. Either way, he should be thankful that he's doing his press tour at the same time as Chris Brown -- because in comparison, John looks like a real catch.
