How do you break up a band when the band consists of your family members? It's got to be a tough call, but the Jonas Brothers have officially done it. After sending fans into a frenzy by deleting their Twitter account and canceling their tour, Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas announced on Thursday morning that the band is no more.
"It was a unanimous decision," Joe, 24, told People in an interview with his brothers.
When the Jonas Brothers cancelled their 19-date tour two weeks ago, their spokesperson blamed a "deep rift within the band" and a "disagreement over their music direction." Now Nick, 21, is saying that he initiated the break up.
"I was feeling kind of trapped," Nick told People. "I needed to share my heart with my brothers."
Kevin, 25, clarified that the band is "over for now," and even Nick admitted that "it's really hard to say 'forever.'" That's probably not a huge consolation to fans, who have already begun expressing their grief through memes.

There are also some pretty devastated Millennials venting on their Tumblrs. Some sample quotes, reprinted verbatim:
"I just cant, i dont know what to do... it's like my life is over. My happines is over."
"I’m still in shock and sad. I just can’t comprehend the word “split” that is floating around twitter and tumblr. It’s like, it’s not even real. Jonas Brothers can’t break up. I feel like I’ve been cheated and fooled. I waited for 4 years and they just left."
"I can’t believe that the Jonas Brothers have officially broken up. I feel like I’ve lost a huge portion of my life."
"i feel like my heart has been ripped out, shot, ran over, stabbed, lit on fire, and dropped from the highest place in the world. I had so much hope and faith in them! i believed in them! ive been there every single step of the way..all around the country just to see them. And this happens."
We're not going to make fun of this. it's hard to lose something that's been with you since you were a kid, and many teenagers and young adults grew up with the Jonas brothers. They also haven't released an album in four years, and there was supposed to be one on the horizon. Now fans are worried that the project is lost forever.
Even those devastated kids should realize, though, that this split was a long time coming. The band has dramatically decreased in popularity, and there have been constant rumors of in-fighting over the past few years. The brothers themselves seem much more occupied with their solo projects: Nick's band Nick Jonas & The Administration, Kevin's reality show Married to Jonas, and Joe's singing and songwriting career.
There are darker rumors, too, about drug use, hidden sexuality and toxic girlfriends. But most likely, the Jonas Brothers just outgrew the band. And fans are facing the startling realization that they need to do the same.
