Jonas Alert! The Disney Channel's second season of JONAS, which airs on June 20 (as if your tween didn't already have the date starred, circled and stickered on her calendar), relocates the Lucas brothers to Los Angeles, ditches the stage, keeps the side characters and gives the show a new title: JONAS L.A. If this sounds both familiar and ominous, it might be because two other L.A.-area relocations for TV show icons didn't go over so well.
Exactly thirty years ago, in its sixth season, Laverne & Shirley moved from Milwaukee to Burbank. Two years later, Shirley got pregnant and moved out. The show was cancelled not long after that.
Last year, Conan O'Brien moved from New York to the Los Angeles area to take over the helm of The Tonight Show. I don't need to tell you how that turned out.
Does this mean JONAS is headed for disaster? Nah, the Jonas Brothers can still do no wrong -- although the original JONAS concept, which cast them as spies for the government (J.O.N.A.S. was to be an acronym for "Junior Operatives Networking As Spies") now seems a little off-key.
Teen superstars portraying teen superstars has always been a winning formula for Disney, and JONAS will likely continue (JONAS Paris? JONAS Johannesburg? JONAS Poughkeepsie?) until the boys no longer enjoy the hobby of TV stardom, or until tweens swap them in for newer kids on the block, whichever happens first.
