According to Sparks, 22, her year-long romance with the R&B singer, 23, is the real thing... and a proposal would not be out of the question. "It's not a conversation that we're scared about," Sparks told Us Weekly at a City of Hope charity bash in Los Angeles on Oct. 10.
"Before, we both went through tragedies this year -- he broke his neck and then Whitney [Houston] passed -- so before it might have been a little too crazy," she explains.
In January, Derulo fell on his neck while practicing choreography for his tour and wound up fracturing one of his vertebra. Doctors reportedly told him he "could have" been paralyzed from the fall. Meanwhile, Houston -- Sparks' onscreen mother in her film debut Sparkle -- died unexpectedly on Feb. 11 at the age of 48.
After surviving such a difficult spring together, Sparks says they changed their priorities and were able to focus on what's important -- each other.
"You really see the people you love and you go, I don't want to lose you," she explained. "So, it's a conversation we have, but we're not in a rush."
And even though there's no timer going off in Sparks' head about walking down the aisle, she says she would definitely welcome Derulo popping the question.
"I hope he does!" Sparks exclaimed. "It's not happening yet, but I hope so!"
