If the biggest player in Hollywood comedy hired a little comedy team with a big cult following, how funny would that be?
Judd Apatow, director/writer/producer of some of the decade's most popular comedies, has signed on to a three-movie deal with two members of Human Giant, the comedy team featured in the short-lived MTV series of the same name. The Giants behind the deal are Aziz Ansari, hilarious co-star of NBC's Parks and Recreation, and director Jason Woliner.
Ansari and Apatow's relationship goes back to this year's comedy-drama Funny People, starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, written and directed by Apatow. Ansari had a featured role as Randy, Rogen's hilariously obnoxious stand-up comedy rival. Ansari took the part very seriously, even performing his own stand-up gigs as the Randy character -- which led to the DVD mockumentary Raaaaaaandy!, included on the Funny People DVD. The comedian clearly impressed Apatow (a former stand-up comedian himself), who's planning on making a series of films with him. Here's the run down:
- The first movie will be Let's Do This, "a road movie about two guys who work for a motivational speaking company." Little Miss Sunshine as buddy movie?
- The second movie will star Ansari, and center on "a disgraced cosmonaut who is forced to return to outer space to clear his name." This one sounds like a major departure for Apatow, who's always dealt in the awkward comedy of real-life (Knocked Up, 40-Year-Old Virgin) -- not in the broad humor of sci-fi fantasy.
- The third movie is more of a mystery: it will somehow involve Ansari's role in Funny People, and yet "will likely have nothing to do with the character Randy." How does that work, exactly? Maybe Ansari has his own take on the world of stand-up comedy.
If these plots sound a little sketchy, that's no accident; says Ansari:
"We are hesitant to say too much about our ideas. A few years ago, we announced our new idea about a film where the world ended in the year 2014. We have since had to stop developing this movie." (So that's where Roland Emmerich gets his ideas!)
Human Giant's Woliner will be directing all three films, with Apatow (who produced Anchorman and Superbad, among others) producing. No word on whether fellow Human Giant members Paul Scheer (now on the FX comedy The League) or Rob Huebel (soon to be on the Adult Swim series Children's Hospital) will be involved.
