It was supposed to be all about Justin Bieber on Tuesday's American Idol. Well, the teen sensation and whichever contestants would make it to the Idol finale. But before 16-year-old pop phenom Bieber could hit the stage and the final two were revealed (Congrats, Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze! Sorry, Casey James!), season 9's penultimate episode of the Fox series featured none other than....Travis Garland?
If you found yourself asking, "Who is Travis Garland?" last night, you weren't alone. Most viewers were introduced to Garland, 20, for the very first time. Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton appeared on Idol to introduce his "discovery" and also boasted via his Twitter that, "TRAVIS GARLAND!!! A star is born! Congrats @TravisGarland." And on Idol he also claimed that Garland is better than Justin Timberlake!
Turns out, Garland is a former member of the boy band NLT (Not Like Them) which included Glee star Kevin McHale (who plays Artie Abrams) as a member. His debut album will be released on Interscope Records later this year, also home to Lady Gaga and newly signed YouTube star Grayson Chance.
Garland performed his single "Believe" first (watch the video below) as Bieber followed with his earworm hit "Baby". While he certainly wasn't bad, we just didn't get the vibe that he was the next JT. When Garland spoke to MTV, he talked about how well he would bode if he were an AI contestant, "I don't know, Simon (Cowell) would probably say something snarky," he joked. "I really don't know. I guess I would just have to do it to find out."
The jury is out about whether Garland -- and whether he's got the talent to be the Next Big Thing. Do you think Travis Garland is a star in the making? Chime in below!
