He's ready, and so are we. Justin Timberlake at very, very, very long last announced that he has a new project on the way, and a countdown clock on his website seems to imply that we'll find out more -- or get a new album? a new song to love? -- on Jan. 14 at midnight.
"I am the one who sits and is obsessive about it before you even get to hear it," the 31-year-old says in the announcement, which he revealed to the world in a tweet. "I don't want to put anything out that I don't love. You just don't get that every day. You have to wait for it. I'm ready."
While he wasn't specific about the gift he's giving fans next week, a source confirmed to Billboard that a new album is dropping soon. The Hollywood Reporter is also resporting that J.T. has about 20 new songs in the works. Okay, now we're excited.
It's been seven years since Timberlake last serenaded us, and FutureSex/LoveSounds was so downright delicious to our ears that we assumed that it wouldn't be long until we got more "Sexy Back"-style tunes. Unfortunately -- or, rather, fortunately -- Timberlake waited until he was actually inspired to make the music instead of just pumping out a blasé pop album, and for that we should be thankful. If Timberlake waited until he was sure that his music was going to be great before he decided to release it, then we're likely in for quite a treat.
There's also the fact that we now know who Timberlake is crooning about. He recently married Jessica Biel, so now we know
who we should hate who Timberlake's serenading in all his love songs. That's a good thing, right?
Considering the fact Timberlake has been working with the Coen brothers on a new movie about the 1960s folk scene in New York City called Inside Llewyn Davis, hopefully some of that music's influence will affect his new record. While we're totally fine with the idea of Timberlake doing the same old pop music, we also hope that he's developed as an artist during the past seven years and has tried something new.
Of course, we're also just simply excited about the fact that Timberlake is finally bringing sexy back again. That man has aged very, very well, and he's never sexier than when he's singing about all the ways he's going to "rock your body."
Timberlake had so many hit songs during his solo career that we're desperate to hear what his next catchy tune is. We still manage to incorporate "Cry Me A River" into conversation, but if you need a bit of a refresher, here are some of our favorite J.T. music videos from his solo career:
