Justin Timberlake has gone from boy-band heartthrob to respected musician to successful actor, but one thing has been constant throughout his career: the gossip about his love life. Having dated such famous ladies as Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz and Jessica Biel, Timberlake is accustomed to the attention. Still, he doesn't appreciate the negative rumors about his fidelity -- or, for that matter, the ones about Britney.
"None of it's true, so I shouldn't even dignify it with an answer," says Timberlake, 30. "The thing is, I'm not going to sacrifice my friendships with people who are my costars I meet in the business. I'm not going to avoid spending time with people because someone who doesn't know me makes assumptions about what's going on. That's bulls***."
The Friends with Benefits star says he avoids reading about himself on the Internet for that very reason. "My life is not on the Internet," he says. "My life is right here, right now." And when asked why he doesn't just date somebody non-famous to take the pressure off, Timberlake says that it's not very likely.
"The girl from the dry cleaners is not going to understand how I feel about the work schedule and pressures I have," he admits. "You probably gravitate toward people who understand your scenario. At the end of the day you just want someone who gets you, who can be a friend."
And speaking of friends, the singer seems to pride himself on staying friendly with his exes -- like Diaz, with whom he filmed some racy scenes for the upcoming comedy Bad Teacher.
"It sounds complicated to everybody else, but it wasn't to us," says Timberlake of their on-screen romance. "I knew at some point we'd have to promote the film and people would say, 'Oh my God, that's so weird that you two dated for four years.' I don't know what else to say except the truth, which is that we're friends. We don't talk to each other all the time, but we respect each other, and on some level we'll always love each other -- but in our new capacity as friends. I think the world of her."
Timberlake doesn't seem to have maintained that same closeness with Spears, whom he recently admitted he hasn't spoken to in 10 years. But when Playboy brings up the viral video featuring an "old Britney" and "new Britney" dance-off, Timberlake is quick to defend his old flame.
"The Internet is a cruel place. What a f***ed-up thing to do," exclaims Timberlake. "This thing that happens online bothers me -- these anonymous commenters... I'd love to see the people who comment about Britney online say those things to her face, because they couldn't. Also, in Britney's defense, if you pulled up a video I did from 2003, I couldn't do the s*** it did then either."
Aww, he still cares! We love that Timberlake is such a gentlemen about his exes, even a popular target like Britney. Although he does admit he has one regret about dating her.
"Britney and I wore matching denim outfits (to the 2001 American Music Awards)," he recalls, cringing. "I'd probably pay good money to get some of those pictures off the Internet."
