Picture Justin Timberlake wearing red lifeguard shorts, running into the waves in slow-motion. Enjoying the mental image? You may soon be seeing it in a theater near you! The soapy lifeguard drama Baywatch, which aired from 1989 to 1999, is in the early stages of being turned into a movie -- and reportedly, Timberlake is being courted for the starring role.
Does that make Justin Timberlake the new David Hasselhoff? Not exactly. From the report at Twitch Film, it sounds like the 31-year-old musican-turned-actor would be playing a whole new character. While Hasselhoff, 59, played a Navy Seal-turned-lifeguard on the TV show, Timberlake would be playing an Olympic swimmer-turned-lifeguard in the film.
But that won't be the only difference between the Baywatch show and the Baywatch movie (if the movie does indeed happen). While the former could often be unintentionally funny (so many bomb scares! so many slow-motion montages!), the film version will be a flat-out comedy.
"I think it's a big opportunity. This is a comedy, and I think we have a very interesting take -- a classical idea that will be fresh for the world audience," Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, the man behind this Baywatch reboot, told the Hollywood Reporter in March of 2011. "It's one of the best-known titles that's out there."
Given the show's many fans, the new film would still contain elements of the original Baywatch -- including, possibly, some of its stars. Twitch reports that there are roles in the script for both Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, should they choose to accept them. It seems like a good bet: Anderson has always been willing to make fun of herself (see Borat), and Hasselhoff seems open for convincing.
"I think if they bring [Baywatch] back, they'll probably screw it up, or they'll make a joke out of it, which is unfortunate, but you never know," the actor told Movieline in May. "I'm looking at the Baywatch episodes right now in my office -- I've got 200 of them. I'm looking at Knight Rider, going, 'Wow, I've done some pretty wild stuff.' Would I go back to it? Sure. I'd do anything."
Now, whether Timberlake will go for it is something else entirely. Maybe if they also offered a role to Jessica Biel? He seems pretty willing to do anything these days as long as she's involved...
