Why Kanye West Just Wants You to Forgive Him

"I need to recapture the hearts of the world," the rapper tells Vanity Fair in a new interview. Does he deserve a do-over?

After being ostracized in 2009 for stealing Taylor Swift's VMA moment, Kanye West is desperate for the world to like him again. He's spent the past few months begging for forgiveness on Twitter. He's done everything but send everyone in America flowers. Now, in a new interview with Vanity Fair, West reveals the reason for his change of heart -- and it turns out, it's not about ego. It's about family.

West, 33, says he is still recovering from the loss of his mother, Donda West, who died of complications from cosmetic surgery in 2007. The rapper claims that his outrageous behavior came from his refusal to deal with her death.

"In not dealing with the loss, I also didn’t completely deal with the responsibilities that my mother used to take," West admits. "She was such an amazing, well-rounded person, and I was a spoiled brat ... my mom used to balance my spoiled-bratness by just being one of the most awesome people."

Without his mother around, says West, he lost his grounding and forgot how to have empathy for other people.

"I just cared about myself," says West of the years following Donda's death. "I thought the fact that so many people in the world -- a million in the first week (of a record release) -- cared about me, that that was enough, but it’s not enough."

Now, says the artist, he needs to win back his millions of fans -- for his mother's sake.

"I need to recapture the hearts of the world just to show people how great my mother was, to show people that Donda raised a good guy," he tells the magazine. "My responsibility is to make music that’s progressive, that makes me happy, that makes everyone happy. My job in society isn’t to be mad. My job is to present good music."

Surprising as it is, West seems to have been truly humbled by the post-VMA fallout. If his upcoming album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, is a success, then he may get what he wants: a career do-over. And this time, he'll be sure to make his mama proud.
