Kate Beckinsale: "I Go Back & Forth" on Having Another Baby

The 38-year-old actress says she contemplates having a child with hubby Len Wiseman -- but says she doesn't "want to upset the apple cart"

Kate Beckinsale has been married to Underworld writer/director Len Wiseman for eight years now, so why haven't they had a child? That's a question that the 38-year-old actress has been asking herself a lot recently.

"I go back and forth on it," she tells Glamour UK (via People), citing her 13-year-old daughter Lily (from her eight-year relationship with actor Michael Sheen) as part of her reason. "I feel very lucky in that we navigated a pretty bumpy situation and that Lily's OK," she says, referring to her split from Sheen. "So my resistance is along the lines of, 'Do I want to upset the apple cart?'"

The Total Recall star is aware that she can't be indecisive too long. "At some point the decision will be made for me, when my ovaries dry up and die," she jokes. "We'll see. There's nothing that makes me go, 'And now I must have triplets.'"

But she's not stressing about getting older; in fact, Beckinsale is relishing in every passing year.

"Aging is going to happen and it should," she says. "I'm so much happier in myself these days. I wouldn't like to be 23. I prefer what I look like now; I prefer what I feel like now. I'm not having a hip replacement or a face lift or hot flashes. The only thing that's different is I've got a child who isn't dying to hold my hand on the way into school.”

Beckinsale also isn't sure she'd be able to cope with the weight gain of having another child at this point. "I was gigantic after I had Lily. I put on a good [50 lbs.], and it didn't go until I stopped breastfeeding," she says. "I was lucky that Britain wasn't so paparazzi-orientated then."

But at the same time, Beckinsale understands the upsides to a new baby in her life and seems like she wants to share that experience with Wiseman, who doesn't have any children of his own.

"There's absolutely part of me that goes, 'I'd love to have a baby in the relationship I'm in, and have that experience when the relationship's really good and exclusive,'" she says. "But I'm just not sure."
