When Kate Gosselin strode onto the set of ABC's The View today (guest co-hosting again), she looked a little different. Shoulder-length hair, a slightly different shade of blond. Seems the extensions she got back in January were just the beginning of an ongoing makeover process. (You can actually keep up with her hair schedule -- no joke! -- on her hairstylist Ted Gibson's beauty blog.)
Gosselin, tanned and toned in a pink sleeveless frock, cohosted an episode that was focused on people fighting addictions (guests included Dr. Drew Pinsky and Mackenzie Phillips) but when the focus was on her, she used the opportunity to deflect recent criticism in the media. This time it's because she's competing in ABC's Dancing with the Stars instead of staying home with her kids. Also, as Sherri Shepherd put it, "I heard that you have been a total diva on the set."
"I have one answer," she said about the latter accusation. "I’m 3,000 miles away." Gosselin explained that her dance practice sessions have actually taken place back home in Pennsylvania. "I’ve been out there [to the DWTS set in Los Angeles] once for the initial thing," she said. "[I] danced for five days there, met everyone, wonderful, had a great time, it is so much fun, a great honor." The rest of the time since joining the cast, she and her DWTS partner Tony Dovolani have been rehearsing for five to six hours a day in her family's basement, where she had a dance floor put in.
"As soon as we’re done, [the kids] want to see our progress," she said. "So we turn the cameras off, send them on their way, [and] the kids come downstairs and hang out."
Asked how she's able to care for the kids and work, she said, "It's a delicate balance of a working mom. I’m grateful to have work -- I have kids to provide for. It’s just a matter of setting a schedule. A lot of times I’m dancing before they’re up in the morning or after they’re in bed or while they’re in school....If you meet me -- not the tabloid me, not anything else -- you will realize that I’m just like moms everywhere working."
For the record, she corrected Shepherd when she referred to Jon as her husband. (He's her ex.) Asked if Jon was helping out, Gosselin replied that he "stayed at our house for a week during the time when I was in L.A." When Joy Behar asked if he was kicking in financial support, Gosselin changed the subject. We're guessing there wasn't a positive answer, and Kate has often showed a knack for resisting the lure of taking the low road. Meanwhile, is she on the road to increased fame as a champion dancer? We'll start finding out Monday!
How do you think Kate Gosselin will do on DWTS?
