On 'Today', Kate Gosselin Insists It's Kids First, Fame Second

As her ex alleges in court papers that Dancing With the Stars is making her an unfit mother, Kate Gosselin fires back

For Kate Gosselin, fame is not her priority. That's what the reality TV mom of eight (star of the doomed TLC series Jon & Kate Plus 8) told Meredith Vieira on NBC's Today show, in response to accusations by ex-husband Jon Gosselin, who has called Kate an "absentee mother" since she began competing on Dancing With the Stars.

Jon, 33, is suing for primary custody of their children. He claims that Kate -- currently mastering ballroom moves wtih Tony Dovolani on ABC's wildly popular dance contest -- is more focused on being a celebrity than a mother.

What was the fledgling hoofer's reaction to those claims? "I'm a working mom, and cameras are on me, so people catch me travelling and working. I've got to work harder than ever now because I am a single mom."

Kate, who was a nurse at the time she and then-husband Jon decided to start a family (before both became reality-TV stars), claims that pursuing her career as a television personality is the best choice to provide for her brood.

"I have to work," she said. "I have to provide for them. And it's a struggle that every working mom, especially single moms, go through, and I'm really feeling it now, and it's really hard."

Gosselin insisted she would rather be at home (in Reading, Penn.) than in New York City or Los Angeles. "In my heart I'm always in my kitchen, baking and cooking for my kids, and I'll always be there," she told Vieira. "It's a struggle to be here, to be anywhere. The emotion that you see is because I would rather be at home with them."

Besides working on DWTS choreography, Kate is also promoting her latest book I Just Want You to Know (in which she writes letters to her eight children) and will be gearing up for her own new TLC reality series, Twist of Kate.

All of these demands require spending time away from her kids, but Kate says she makes the best of what little time she has with her children. "I make the most of every minute I have with them," she said. "When I'm home, we make those little spots of time really big in our memories."
