Will and Kate's Surprising Choice for Prince George's Godparents

Our favorite new parents chose a select group of friends to be Prince George's godparents

It's official: Prince William and Kate Middleton have chosen godparents -- seven of them! -- for their 3-month-old son, Prince George.

Our bets were on Harry and Pippa, but according to the Prince of Wales’ web site, the royal couple skipped family members in favor of friends. The godparents are: Oliver Baker, a friend of Kate and Wills’ from the University of St. Andrews; Emilia Jardine-Paterson, who went to Marlborough College with Kate; Earl Grosvenor; Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Julia Samuel, who was a friend of Princess Diana’s; Zara Tindall; and William van Cutsem. Of the lucky group, only Tindall is family (she’s one of Wills’ cousins -- and an Olympic equestrian to boot.)

Though godparents play an important religious role in a child's life -- they're traditionally charged with protecting the family's faith -- modern parents often use the title as a way to honor a special friend in their child's life.

Earlier, unconfirmed reports had friend of the couple Fergus Boyd named as a godparent in addition to Jardine-Paterson (whose maiden name is d'Erlanger), prompting The Sunday Times to report, "The couple's choice of godparents sends a clear signal that for the younger royals it is friendship, not social status, that counts."

Friends forever? Let’s hope so!
