As a teenage supermodel, Kate Moss was accused of promoting anorexia. Twenty years later, she's still the go-to example of a too-skinny model. Now Moss, 39, wants everyone to know that she was never anorexic -- nor did she ever do heroin, despite being the face of "heroin chic."
"It was horrible, especially the anorexic thing," Moss says in the new issue of Allure. "The heroin, I was like, 'Oh, it's ridiculous. I know I don't do heroin. Just because I wear a bit of black eyeliner that's smudged.' But the anorexic thing was a lot more upsetting, to be held responsible for somebody's illness. I wasn't anorexic."
In fact, Kate was mortified by her small body. It certainly didn't fit the "supermodel" mold of the time: curvy, statuesque women like Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell.
"I didn't like my flat chest," she says. "I was like, 'Oh, I'm going to have a tit job.' Can you imagine I used to be so scared about 'Oh, I don't want to show my body?'"
As anyone who lived through the '90s knows, Moss did show her body -- a lot. Her nude Calvin Klein ads became instantly iconic, though she admitted last year that she "had a nervous breakdown" after the shoot.
"It didn't feel like me at all... I didn't like it. I couldn't get out of bed for two weeks," Moss told Vanity Fair.
We can remember when all the teenage girls desperately wanted to look like Kate Moss. How sad and ironic is it that Moss didn't feel comfortable in her own skin?
Fortunately, Moss has a much stronger sense of herself now. She no longer minds doing nude photo shoots, saying, "Now that I've shown [my body], it doesn't bug me about my moles, or 'This isn't big enough' and 'That's not smooth enough.'"
Plus, she has something outside herself to focus on: her 10-year-old daughter Lila, who is hilariously obsessed with The Devil Wears Prada.
"She puts a little outfit on and picks up the phone: 'Hello, Miranda Priestly's office. Can you hold? Patrick Demarchelier on the line!' I died when I heard her do it," Moss tells Allure with a laugh. "So funny. She doesn't have a clue who it is, but it's word for word."
