Will Fans Follow Katherine Heigl to the Movies?

Katherine Heigl is officially leaving Grey's Anatomy -- and she's chosen to announce it to the world by saying "I'm Sorry" on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. Heigl, 31, can only do pennance for so long before she resumes her career... so where will we see the former Grey lady next?

It's very clear that the Emmy winner is tired of being a TV star. And with big-screen vehicles like Knocked Up (2007) and The Ugly Truth (2009) under her belt, Heigl has no shortage of film offers. This June, Heigl adds to her romantic comedy repertoire with Killers, opposite Ashton Kutcher. And in December, she'll be moving into dramatic territory with Life As We Know It, playing a woman who adopts her deceased friend's orphaned daughter. (The role may have hit close to home: Heigl and husband Josh Kelly adopted a Korean daughter, Naleigh, last year). Next year, she'll reportedly be starting production on several new comedies, plus the action film One for the Money (which, judging from the success of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels, has the potential to turn into a female Bourne franchise).

So the question isn't whether Heigl will keep working. The question is: Do audiences like her enough to follow her to the movies? The actress is notorious for candid, often ill-advised, statements about her career -- like calling Knocked Up "a little sexist", and complaining that she didn't have enough material on Grey's Anatomy to submit herself for an Emmy nomination. Indeed, it seems her gripes get more publicity than her acting skills. Perhaps she's trying to come across as someone who "tells it like it is" -- but the strategy may have backfired. What Grey's fan wishes to hear Heigl trashing their favorite show? And if we liked her in Knocked Up (which we did), does that now mean we're sexist?

Now that she doesn't have Izzie to fall back on, Heigl may have to play extra-nice... and hopefully, make better movies than The Ugly Truth.
