When we last saw Izzie Stevens, (Katherine Heigl) on Grey’s Anatomy, she was flatlining at Seattle Grace Hospital.
The producers of the show took some of the suspense from the cliffhanger when they announced Heigel would return for a sixth season.
But there’s a catch - - Heigel is taking a hiatus from the ABC medical drama to star alongside Josh Duhamel in a movie.
If you don’t want to know how the show will address Heigl’s departure, you should stop reading … now!
Reportedly Seattle Grace Hospital is merging with Mercy West creating twice the staff members. And with the additional doctors, Izzie will be laid off.
Hey, at least she survived the season finale, right?
Is there any coincidence that Heigel is taking a leave of absence from Grey’s Anatomy after her comments on The Late Show With David Letterman earlier this summer?
"Our first day back was Wednesday, and I keep saying this because I hope it embarrasses them . . . a 17-hour day," Heigl said in July. "I think it's cruel and mean."
She won’t have to worry about 17-hour days on the set of Grey’s Anatomy for at least five episodes.
For a show that’s entering its sixth season, it’s had more than its share of drama with the actors.
Isaiah Washington’s character was dropped from the show after allegedly using a derogatory slur towards co-star T.R. Knight.
Brooke Smith was fired from the show last November after Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes didn’t find “the magic and chemistry with Brooke’s character (Erica Hahn) would sustain in the long run.” Other media outlets felt it was a decision by the network to downplay homosexuality on the show.
Most recently Knight left the show after citing a breakdown in communication between himself and Rhimes.
How soon before Heigl’s hiatus turns into a permanent vacation?
Do you think we will see the last of Izzie on this upcoming season of Grey’s Anatomy?
