Taylor Swift says she was invited to the Kennedy wedding she was accused of crashing. Unfortunately, that's not how the mother of the bride sees it -- and Kathie Lee Gifford is backing her up.
The Today host was a guest at the wedding of Kyle Kennedy, where the country star made a surprise appearance with her boyfriend Conor Kennedy. After the event, the bride's mother Victoria told the Boston Herald that Conor did not RSVP, but showed up with Swift anyway. Concerned that the famous singer would detract from the bride's big day, Kyle's mother reportedly asked them to leave -- and they refused.
And that's how Kathie Lee remembers it, too.
"The truth is, Vicky's account of what happened in Boston is accurate," said Gifford, who attendedt he wedding because her husband Frank is the bride's grandfather. "She said to me, 'I'm really not happy about this.'"
On Thursday's episode of Today, Kathie Lee gave her take on the wedding fiasco. Watch the clip below.
Gifford told cohost Hoda Kotb that Conor did not RSVP for the "beautiful sit-down dinner that had been planned for months," then texted an hour before the wedding to ask, "Can I bring my girlfriend?"
"(Victoria) said very nicely, 'please do not come.' Guess what? They came," Gifford said. Next thing she knew, Taylor and Kennedy were waiting outside the reception, trying to get in.
“I was out in the hallway, (Taylor) was waiting, standing around, and (Conor) came out, took her by the hand and they left," she recalled. "I'm not sure she didn't know she wasn't invited."
The singer and her teenage beau returned later in the evening to dance at the reception. Gifford said that the debacle wasn't a big deal -- just a big breach of etiquette.
"If (Conor) had done the right thing originally and RSVP'd, and then had called weeks before and said 'May I', then I think Vicki would have graciously said, 'Yes you may,'" said Gifford.
Moreover, as Kathie Lee saw it, it was rude for a celeb to show up unannounced and steal attention from the bride.
"It's the bride's day," said the TV personality (who is, of course, a celebrity herself -- albeit one who RSVP'd).
Swift's rep told the Herald that "Taylor was invited to the wedding and the bride thanked her profusely for being there."
