iVillage Woman of the Week: Kathryn Bigelow

In a historic first for the Academy Awards, a woman wins (and over her ex-husband, no less!) the Best Director Oscar

Each week we pick one woman who's done something to make us proud. This week we're loving Kathryn Bigelow for her history-making achievements at the Academy Awards.

Bigelow was up for Best Director for her heart-pounding Iraq war drama, The Hurt Locker, and when her name was called, she became the first woman to ever receive the honor. Competing against Avatar director James Cameron -- whom she divorced in 1991 -- she was also the first woman to ever beat out her ex-husband for an Oscar!

The 58-year-old actress gave a heartfelt speech, calling for the safe return of soldiers abroad, and then walked into the wings of the Kodak Theater stage. But a bonus surprise came when she was immediately ushered back to the podium to accept the night's most prestigious prize -- the award for Best Picture.

A true underdog, The Hurt Locker had the lowest number of ticket sales of any Best Picture-winning film in Academy history. But its critical acclaim clearly helped it trump crowd-favorite Avatar. Beating out your ex for two Oscars? Now that's some sweet revenge!
