Kathy Griffin has never missed an opportunity to take a dig at a celebrity -- but this weekend, her genius for inappropriate humor backfired. While hosting VH1 Divas: Salute the Troops, the comedienne made fun of Dancing with the Stars finalist Bristol Palin for being "the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight." Griffin then joked, "She gained, like, 30 pounds a week. It was fantastic. She's like the white Precious." The joke was tasteless, and the troops in the audience responded by booing. Watch the clip below.
Making fun of a young single mom for gaining weight is pretty harsh, especially in light of Griffin's own struggles with an eating disorder. (Griffin, 50, also joked that she was showing off her "starvation body" when she came onstage in a camouflage-print bikini). The comedienne could tell the audience was not amused, so she made light of the flubbed joke and moved on. But Bristol Palin, 20, was watching at home -- and she wasn't amused either.
"The audience's reaction to this 'comedian' spoke volumes, and the decent people I know would probably have booed her, too," Palin told Fox News' Pop Tarts blog. "I hope people didn't have to pay money to hear her negativity and criticisms."
Griffin is hardly the only comedian to use the Palins as a punchline, but she already pushed the limits by having a faux-affair with Bristol's baby-daddy Levi Johnston -- even making him take her to the Palins' home on an episode of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List. If that (admittedly funny) running gag didn't push Bristol into a full-blown feud with Griffin, then the uncalled-for fat joke certainly will.
What is funny is that this whole mess was almost avoided entirely. According to Popeater, VH1 nearly cut the Bristol Palin joke from the telecast after it was booed down by the audience!
