Kathy Ireland's fancy footwork carried her through to this week's gauntlet of Dancing with the Stars – but just barely. The model-turned-business-exec faced singer Macy Gray in the bottom two, but managed to squeak past elimination.
Kathy never claimed to be an expert dancer. She sees DWTS as a fun adventure and an opportunity to do some good. "It's chance to give back," she tells iVillage. The star plans to donate proceeds from the show to various charities, including the Alliance for Christian Education and Elizabeth Taylor HIV/AIDS Foundation.
The mom of three and former Sports Illustrated model traded the Hollywood scene for the furniture business when she founded her $1.4 billion company. To her family, being called a "star" on DWTS was a bit of a stretch. "My kids think it's funny that I'm doing it, because to them I'm not a celebrity," she says.
Even though Kathy no longer sees herself in the celeb world, she's learned that you can never escape the spotlight. After gaining (and losing) 25 pounds last spring, she landed in the news. She was on an airplane when she discovered she was on the cover of PEOPLE magazine.
"I got up to go to the bathroom and it seemed like everyone I passed in the aisle was reading it," she says. "When I got back to my seat, the flight attendant came around with cookies. And everyone was looking to see if I was going to have a cookie. I couldn't eat one!"
These days Kathy is looking as fabulously fit as ever, with the rigorous DWTS practice schedule – and the day-to-day of her hectic lifestyle – no doubt keeping her on track. But the star is never too busy to fit in time for the things she says are truly important: faith and family.
Tune into ABC Monday at 9 p.m. to see if Kathy improves her moves for week two of Dancing with the Stars.
