Talk-show host Katie Couric made the decision to share something private about her past recently when she revealed that, like her guest Demi Lovato, she too had battled an eating disorder in her younger years.
"I felt like it was absolutely the right thing to do," the host tells E! News about discussing her own struggles with bulimia when Lovato -- who is open about her own past battles with body image issues and eating disorders -- sat down with her on the Katie show.
"We were having an honest conversation," explains 55-year-old Couric. "So for me to harbor that kind of secret and not be upfront about it seemed kind of disingenuous."
During the candid conversation with the X Factor judge, Couric admitted she could relate first-hand to Lovato's issues.
"I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that," Couric revealed during Lovato's guest appearance, which aired Sept. 24. "And I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that's wrong, you're full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself."
But although the news might have shocked Couric's fans, she does explain that her own daughters -- Ellie, 21, and Carrie, 16 -- were already privy to the information about their mother's past.
"It wasn't something they heard about on television, or they would have been shocked to hear," she says.
