File this under "news we definitely saw coming": TMZ is reporting that the "final straw" that pushed Katie Holmes to file for divorce from Tom Cruise on Friday after five years of marriage is -- you guessed it -- the actor's firm devotion to Scientology.
Citing "sources close with Katie," the gossip site claims that Holmes, 33, was convinced that Tom, who turns 50 on Tuesday, was going to ship their 6-year-old daughter Suri off to the intense Scientology boot camp known as Sea Organization -- and Katie was having none of it.
While Sea Org may sound like a place where kids get to swim with dolphins, it has actually come under fire from outspoken former Scientologists -- notably filmmaker Paul Haggis -- for its militaristic indoctrination techniques. It doesn't help matters that the official Scientology website says that Sea Org attendees are made to sign "a one-billion-year pledge to symbolize their eternal commitment to the religion." (A one-billion-year pledge sounds like a bit of a big ask for a 6-year-old, don't you think?)
Meanwhile, sources tell Us Weekly that Holmes' surprise divorce filing June 29 wasn't really a surprise at all, but rather a year in the making.
"Every move she made and everything she did was controlled... She felt like she was in Rosemary's Baby," says one source, referring to the 1968 horror film about a young woman who gets tricked into having a baby for her husband's Satanic cult.
"This is about protecting her daughter," another insider tells the magazine. "She wants to be in charge of how Suri is being raised and didn't want her to have an exclusively Scientology education."
If true, these unconfirmed claims would jibe with reports that Holmes is seeking sole custody of Suri.
According to People, on June 28, the actress and her daughter moved out of the N.Y.C. apartment they had shared with Cruise and into a new three-bedroom pad elsewhere in the city.
That Holmes is staying in N.Y.C. and chose to file for divorce there as opposed to Los Angeles, where the family's primary residence was located, also hints that she could be gearing up for a custody battle. New York courts are historically more likely to award sole custody in a contentious divorce than California courts. This fact likely didn't escape Holmes, whose father -- a Toledo, Ohio, divorce lawyer -- reportedly helped orchestrate the swift divorce filing.
Cruise, who has been in Iceland filming the thriller Oblivion through all of this and is said to have been blindsided by the news, released a statement through his lawyer Friday saying that he was "deeply saddened" by the split.
According to reports, Cruise will file for divorce in Los Angeles and seek joint custody of Suri. "There is absolutely no way that he is going to let Katie have sole custody," an insider tells The Hollywood Gossip. "The lines are being drawn."
