When Katie Holmes talked to California's C magazine on June 27, she had to have known she was going to file for divorce from Tom Cruise the following day -- but she played it cool as a cucumber during her chat with senior editor Kelsey McKinnon. That is, until McKinnon asked Holmes, 33, if having daughter Suri had brought her and Cruise, 50, closer together.
"I don't know. I mean... I don't know," a flustered Holmes responded (via WWD) at the time. "People have been having babies a long time."
In retrospect, McKinnon says the writing was on the wall if she'd only known to look.
"Going back over the tapes, there were signs: Holmes was certainly very aware of herself, laying a couple cards on the table but never showing her whole hand," McKinnon writes in the profile. "Most noticeably, the one name decisively absent from her lexicon: Tom Cruise. She never actually refers to him by name over pages and pages of transcription."
Holmes also hinted that she wanted to shift the focus from her personal life to her career, insisting that she's "ready to take on some more challenging roles" (like, say, a new stint to Broadway).
"I feel like I worked so much at such a young age that I really wanted to have life experiences. I feel more balanced and like I have more to bring to the table," Holmes told C. "I always felt like I wanted to catch up [in my personal life] to what I was doing [in my career]."
