Katie Holmes Insists She's Still a Midwestern Girl at Heart

Katie Holmes may live a posh lifestyle -- complete with a luxury Manhattan apartment and one of the most famous exes in the world -- but deep down she insists she's not a glamorous woman.

"I still think of myself as Midwestern," the Toledo, Ohio, native, told the New York Times while promoting her new Broadway show Dead Accounts. One prime example: "I mean, I've had box wine... It's good. And it's a lot easier to open."

Holmes' love of the Midwest -- and her hometown in particular -- may explain why she fled there with daughter Suri, 6, when news of her divorce from Tom Cruise spread. While at home in Ohio, Holmes' father Martin took his daughter and granddaughter out for ice cream every night.

The divorced mother of one even discovered a favorite flavor that served as her comfort food: "Spouse Like a House" (vanilla with chocolate-covered pretzels and caramel). She "worked off the calories by running in the parks of her childhood home," the Times reveals.

Holmes' Broadway veteran costar Norman Leo Butz says she is a "total nurturer" who "is always asking us how we are, if our needs as Equity members are being met."

The newly single actress, 33, also explained how -- like her Dead Accounts character Lorna, who comes from a large Catholic Ohio family -- she relies on her parents and siblings for support.

"I have these moments where what's going on in my life is unbelievable, and you have to tell everyone to figure out how to respond. My siblings and I are always on the phone saying: 'Oh my God, what do you think? What does Mom think? What does Dad think?’ And then you act accordingly."
