Katie Holmes is making a very fashionable comeback. Looking gorgeous in a button-down blouse and beaded skirt, the actress appeared at the Style Awards in New York City on Wednesday to present the designer of the year award to Carolina Herrera. And, of course, Holmes earned extra attention because it was her first public appearance since her split from Tom Cruise this summer. (If you don't count those zillion paparazzi photos of Katie and Suri running around the city!)
The event was a fitting night out for Holmes, whose fashion career has been taking off lately. The actress is the co-designer of the high-end clothing brand Holmes & Yang and will be presenting a collection at New York Fashion Week for the very first time this weekend. On top of that, she has also been named the first-ever celebrity face of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics.
It's a lot to take on for someone who's relatively new to the fashion world, but Holmes, 33, is embracing the challenge. Her main career goal, she told Women's Wear Daily, is constantly trying new things and not "being afraid to fail."
"Who cares? At least you tried," she told the industry publication on Tuesday. "It’s usually the people who haven’t tried who are the naysayers."
Not surprisingly, Holmes didn't have much to say to WWD about her personal life, offering only a brief comment on the paparazzi swarm that follows her everywhere.
"I have a lot of feelings about the press. There are a lot of people with much bigger problems and who are less fortunate," she said diplomatically. "I try to keep it all in perspective."
She was eager to talk, however, about the new Holmes & Yang collection.
"We use a lot of silks and leathers and suedes. This year, we’re excited because we’ve incorporated a lot of new trims," said Katie of the clothes, which sell for between $700 and $3,000 an item. "It’s basically pieces that have evolved from basics, but not too far. They’re just nice, well-made luxury items that highlight the woman wearing them."
As it turns out, Holmes also has a DIY side. Her publicist confided to the magazine that Katie is "a really good decoupauger."
"I spray-paint shoe racks, because, why not?" the actress admitted. "I’ve always painted and done crafts at home -- I have to stay creative in every aspect [of my life]. My sister teaches art, and she gives me a lot of ideas."
A Katie Holmes Original Spray-Painted Shoe Rack? Now that's something we'd like to see at Fashion Week!
