Multiple sources have confirmed their breakup, but we still don't know exactly what went wrong. However, the sources are hinting that the split may not stick. "It's sad, but it's not over until it's over," a friend told Us Weekly. "You have to see how things play out. She's leaving the window open. They have both been so focused on work."
Okay, so Katy may be leaving the window open, but we are not. We've said it before and we'll say it again: The girl deserves better. Sure, Perry, 28, and Mayer, 35, seemed happy in recent months -- spending Christmas together, canoodling at the Presidential Inauguration and cuddling at the Grammys. But we still can't believe that Mayer was really ready to change his ways.
It's been proven with everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Taylor Swift that Mayer is not an especially great boyfriend. When we heard that Perry, who had just come out of a rough marriage with Russell Brand, had started dating Mayer in summer 2012, we were immediately alarmed. She deserves a nice guy, and the notorious player did not seem to fit the bill. Sadly, our opinion hasn't changed since, despite all the nice things Mayer has said about Perry.
"For the first time in my life, I don't feel like I'm in a celebrity relationship," Mayer recently told Anthony Mason of CBS Sunday Morning. "I really don't. I'm not in a high-profile -- I know it's high-profile. It's hard to explain. ... It feels like something that's very human."
It sounds like they had a very human breakup, as well. And like all breakups, there's a chance that Perry and Mayer could reconcile (again!). But we think it would be best for all parties involved if these two stayed friends and just moved on. Now if we could just find a genuinely nice guy who won't break our girl's heart... (Jason Segel, we heard you're single!)
