Watching last night’s American Idol felt oddly familiar and then I realized why – it felt like being back at high school and seeing the wanna-be homecoming queen spar with the head of the cheer-leading squad. Here's the clip from E! News:
Katy Perry joined the American Idol judges for the show and to say sparks flew between the singer and judge Kara DioGuardi would be putting it mildly. Perry, 25, seated next to the 39-year-old songwriter, seemed determined to make her mark, if not by making astute observations then through spewing bitchy remarks.
One major conflict came when auditioning singer Chris Golightly performed the classic, Stand by Me, after telling host Ryan Seacrest about his tough childhood.
DioGuardi wanted to send him to the next round. “Chris, you are one of my favorites today, if not my favorite. . . I think we may look back at this audition and go, 'Wow,'" she said. “You’re the kind of kid who has just enough talent and just enough of a story of pain and stuff that you’ve gone through in your life to really connect with it, and I think you’re only going to get better.”
Perry flatly disagreed, saying no to sending him onward. “This is not a Lifetime movie, sweetheart,” she shot back at DioGuardi. “You have to have talent!”
Diva relations devolved from there. When DioGuardi crooned a bit of Perry’s smash hit, I Kissed a Girl,” the singer sniped back, “I’ll have to throw my Coke in your face.”
At another point during the auditions, DioGuardi mocked stabbing Perry with her pen and said, “You know, we use to be friends. What happened to girl power, girl?” to which Perry merely rolled her eyes.
But kudos to Perry for telling it like it is. "I've always been brutally honest," she warned as Los Angeles auditions kicked off. She may be a jerk but at least she’s not a liar.
