What Drove Katy Perry & Russell Brand to Divorce?

In the wake of the fun-loving couple's shocking split, theories swirl as to why their marriage didn't last

Katy Perry and Russell Brand were an odd match, but they always seemed like they'd be one of the most fun celebrity couples to hang out with. Not anymore: On Friday, Brand filed for divorce from his wife of 14 months, citing irreconcilable differences.

"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends," the comedian told TMZ.

The split doesn't come as a complete surprise, since Perry and Brand spent the Christmas holiday in different countries (without their respective wedding rings). Yet they'd both denied that their marriage was in trouble right up to the bitter end.

So what went wrong between these two eccentric entertainers, who seemed so obviously in love? Here are three theories that have emerged around the Internet.

1. They spent too much time apart. Relationships take work, and it helps if both people show up. The Huffington Post points out that Brand and Perry both spent much of the year traveling for their respective careers: Perry on her California Dreams tour, Brand filming and promoting three films (Arthur, Hop and the upcoming Rock of Ages). They spent so little time together that, according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail, they never even properly moved in to the Los Angeles house they'd purchased together.

2. Katy wanted to party, Russell wanted to settle down. According to TMZ and other sources, Perry, 27, loved going out to events and hitting the afterparties. However, Brand, 36, a recovering drug addict, wasn't into the party scene, and would often try to get Perry to leave early -- triggering major arguments.

3. Russell was jealous of Katy's success. While Brand's two films flopped in 2011, Perry racked up award nominations and record-setting singles -- which may have caused issues in the marriage. "I don't think Russell liked that Katy was the bigger star," a former assistant told the Daily Mail. "He'd pick her to pieces over the most trivial things." (Ironically, now that they're divorcing, Brand stands to profit from Perry's greater success; she's reportedly worth as much as $45 million, in contrast to Brand's $11 million, and he's entitled to half under California law.)

In the wake of the divorce filing, Perry is reportedly jetting off for a girls' trip with her best friend Rihanna, either to Mexico or Barbados. Brand, meanwhile, may be moving back to England for a "fresh start."
