Katy Perry Shoots Down Rumors of a Beach Boys Lawsuit

The "California Gurls" singer clears the air on Twitter: "No one is suing anyone," she says

Katy Perry's uber-popular hit single, "California Gurls," has been stirring up controversy this week, as rumors flew that the Beach Boys were suing the singer over use of their famous lyrics. But Perry says the talk of a lawsuit is all nonsense.

On Wednesday, the New York Post reported that the folks at Rondor Music, who own the rights to the Beach Boys' classic song "California Girls," thought Perry's summer tune was a rip-off of the 1965 original. Reports said they were threatening to sue Perry on behalf of co-writers Brian Wilson and Mike Love ... even though neither of them has any problem with the 2010 homage!

You may be thinking: But the two songs don't sound anything alike! They don't even spell "girls" the same way! You would be correct. The issue is that Snoop Dogg's rap interlude includes one line from the Beach Boys' song: "I wish they all could be California girls." And so, according to an industry source, "Katy has cribbed one of the most famous lyrics in history, so Love and Wilson should be entitled to a writing credit and a portion of the royalties."

According to Perry, there's no truth to the reports of a legal battle. In fact, she took to Twitter Thursday to put the kibosh on the lawsuit rumors, once and for all. "And just to be clear...no one is suing anyone," she wrote. "The press just loves to once again fabricate & exaggerate stories to get hits or sell papers."

Perry has admitted that "California Gurls" is a tribute to the Beach Boys, and both Love and Wilson have said they were flattered by the catchy tune. Love called Snoop's rap "a stroke of genius;" Wilson said the tune was "infectious." And he even joked that he had a special connection with Katy Perry: "We have a lot in common now. We both have done songs called 'California Girls' and we've both kissed girls and liked it."
