Katy Perry’s life has literally been "Hot N Cold."
From her numerous No. 1 singles to her divorce from Russell Brand and on-again, off-again relationship with John Mayer, Perry is known for having a sizzling career, yet frosty love life.
In Vogue’s July issue, the pop singer opens up about her relationships and career -- and we must say, it’s pretty juicy!
Russell Brand asked for a divorce via text (yes, via text).
“He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him,” Perry says. “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”
You read that right. Instead of talking in person to try to fix their relationship -- or at least explain why he was ending their 14-month marriage -- Brand instead decided to break the news through a text message. It’s a shame, too -- we actually liked him.
Her ex-hubby couldn’t hang with another Type A personality.
“At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness. He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting. I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. I let go and I was like: This isn’t because of me; this is beyond me. So I have moved on from that.”
Brand should have known from the get-go that Perry is an independent woman. After all, having nine No. 1 singles and five Grammy nominations doesn’t exactly scream “Miss Dependent.” Luckily, Perry realizes that the divorce isn't her fault. We just wish she spilled what the “real truth” behind the split was!
Turns out, Brand isn't that funny.
“Hysterical in some ways. Until he started making jokes about me and he didn’t know I was in the audience, because I had come to surprise him at one of his shows. So. Hysterical to a point. I mean, I have to claim my own responsibility in things. I do admit that I was on the road a lot. Although I invited him time and time again, and I tried to come home as much as I possibly could. You saw that in the movie.”
Yikes. Can you imagine being the butt of an unexpected joke from your husband? Especially when you took the time out to surprise him?! In her movie, Katy Perry: Part of Me, the singer went to great lengths to try to see her husband and save their marriage. Come to think of it, Brand wasn’t in the movie at all. According to Perry, “That wasn’t edited to leave footage out -- there wasn’t any footage of him.”
She is still in love with John Mayer.
“I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him. All I can say about that relationship is that he’s got a beautiful mind,” she says. “Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds.”
It must be Mayer’s smoldering eyes and beautiful voice that has women under his spell! Despite his infamous treatment of exes like Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, Mayer seems to have learned his lesson this time around. The question is: How long will this kindess toward Perry last?
Even Katy Perry gets insecure.
“Of course I get fazed,” she says. “And when I am in between records, sometimes I doubt myself. I’ll be like: Did I just get lucky, or did I mass-manipulate the world into thinking that seven songs were worth a No. 1 position? And then I go back into the studio and I start writing, and the true essential oil of who I am comes bubbling back up and reminds me that it’s always been inside of me, that nobody can take this away no matter what comment anyone makes. It’s going to be there because it’s what I was born with and it’s what I’ve worked on my whole life.”
It’s nice to know that celebrities really are just like us. Despite her monumental music success and ever-loving fanbase, Perry does have self-doubts about her music. Luckily, it doesn’t stop her from producing the catchy songs that we love to sing!
