Don't get us wrong: We love a big, fancy, shamelessly expensive celebrity wedding. We just wouldn't want to plan one. That's why we fully support Kelly Clarkson's decision to elope!
The singer, who made a wedding-themed music video for her summer single "Tie It Up," had originally planned a giant Nashville extravaganza. She is, after all, marrying country royalty; her fiance Brandon Blackstock is Reba McIntire's stepson. Blake Shelton was all set to officiate. It would have been unforgettable.
"[The wedding] is two months away. It’s end of October. I’m so over it," Clarkson told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show this week. "It’s so overwhelming. We’re just doing a lot: touring and the wedding and the Christmas album, so I’m over the wedding part."
Instead of following through with the stressful wedding, Clarkson, 31, has decided to elope. Her would-be guests will receive an engagement photo that says, "Thank you so much for understanding, but it's just going to be me and Brandon and his two kids and the minister."
Good for Kelly; sounds like she needed a chance to catch her breath. Here are 5 other celebrity couples who chose to elope, and are still happy with their decision!
Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon -- Mariah & Nick passed up the big wedding for an "impulsive" ceremony in the Bahamas in 2008. They've been making it up for it ever since with their elaborate anniversary parties.
Isla Fisher & Sacha Baron Cohen -- The comic actors eloped in Paris in 2010 after a six-year engagement. Their friends found out afterwards. "We did it — we’re married!" Isla wrote her would-be guests in an email. "It was the absolute best day of my life and in so many beautiful moments I missed you all so much. I thought of you as everything was happening, but Sacha and I wanted no fuss — just us!"
Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin -- The actress and Coldplay frontman defied expectations by having a no-frills private wedding in Santa Barbara in December 2003. Not even their parents were invited! They did go the traditional honeymoon route, though, vacationing at a resort in Cabo San Lucas.
Calista Flockhart & Harrison Ford -- After eight years together, the actors sanctified their May-December romance with a "surprise ceremony." The 2010 nuptials took place at the Santa Fe governor's mansion, and were attended by the couple's son Liam; the governor himself was their witness, and the chief justice of New Mexico presided.
Penelope Cruz & Javier Bardem -- Marriage was strictly a family affair for this gorgeous couple, who were married in 2010 at a friend's house in the Bahamas, with only a few relatives present. Cruz did, however, have a John Galliano wedding gown made for the occasion.
