Kelly Clarkson: "I Have No Desire to Be Super-Skinny"

The singer opens up to Redbook about how she dropped 20 pounds and why her new boyfriend has shown her the true meaning of happiness

Kelly Clarkson is all about the pursuit of happiness, not the pursuit of the smallest jean size. The American Idol winner and Duets judge says that she wants her fans to know that it's more important to be comfortable with yourself than fit into a size 2.

"Really, what I try to instill in my fans is to be healthy and happy," the 30-year-old singer says in the July issue of Redbook. "I have no desire to be super-skinny."

Clarkson, who recently began dating Brandon Blackstock, admits that her new romance is a big part of the reason she's dropped 20 pounds over the past couple of months. "No one likes to be not toned when you're dating someone," she said. And in Redbook, the singer reveals that she shed the pounds the good old-fashioned way: with lots and lots of exercise.

"I do cardio. I run. I strength-train using my own body weight," she says. "I don't like free weights, because I build muscle easily."

Speaking of Blackstock, Clarkson tells the magazine that he's helped her find happiness for the first time in her life.

"Where's the kick in the ass? I told my assistant that today," she says. "I said, 'I'm just waiting for something to blow up.' She said, 'No, that's what happiness is.' I'm like, maybe I've never been happy! Because Brandon does -- he makes me happy."

The "Stronger" singer is hoping to instill that same sense of balance and happiness in the Duets contestants, even though no one did that for her when she first rose to fame on he inaugural season of American Idol.

"I'm going to be completely honest -- I had no one looking out for me. They were looking out for the show, and it was horrible," she says. "I was 19 years old. I was smart enough to know that it wasn't about me, but that didn't make it any easier. I'm all cried out about it, but my first four years, I hated my life; I almost quit a dozen times."

As any Kelly Clarkson fan knows, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" -- so we're sure glad she stuck it out!
