When you think "all-American," is Kelly Clarkson the first name that comes to mind? Maybe it should be -- with that feisty, can-do, girl-power vibe she exudes. The Texas native is, after all, the original American Idol.
At her rockin' best, "Miss Independent" herself is an ideal candidate to kick off Independence Day weekend on Friday night -- and ABC knows it: she'll be headlining the TV concert special America Celebrates July 4 at Ford’s Theatre (9 p.m. EST). And count on Clarkson's teen fan base to tune in, as they're still going strong -- just this week, the 28-year-old Grammy winner celebrated her nomination for a 2010 Teen Choice Award.
The all-star event of song and dance will be hosted by Modern Family funnyman Ty Burrell (who plays Phil Dunphy on the series, one of the most hilarious dads on TV this season) and, in addition to music from Clarkson, will feature appearances by President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, General Colin Powell, Dick Van Dyke, Lionel Richie, George Lopez and a host of other stars. And South African bishop Desmond Tutu will be presented with a special medal for exemplifying "the character and lasting legacy of President Abraham Lincoln."
Sure, the special airs a couple days before Independence Day, but we're ready to start celebrating -- let the fireworks begin!
