Kelly Osbourne tells it like it is, whether she's criticizing an outfit on Fashion Police or admitting that an unflattering tabloid story is true. On June 19, the TV personality reportedly had an emotional breakdown on a plane after downing one too many drinks.
Osbourne, 27, hinted at the incident on Twitter last week, writing: "Had a nerves breakdown yesterday that was cool! #Not. Being alone in my own head = danger."
Now Kelly has granted a video interview to RadarOnline in which she outright confirms that she "lost it" on the plane. As we suspected, Kelly's breakdown had everything to do with her brother Jack Osbourne's recent diagnosis with multiple sclerosis (MS).
"I got drunk on the plane to Atlanta. It was on an empty stomach, and before I got on the plane a gentleman came up to me and asked me how my brother was doing, and then he told me about his brother having MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and directed me towards a website," Kelly, 27, told Radar.
"On the plane I started looking at the website," she continued. "It described how bad certain cases of MS really got, and it made me lose it because I’ve sat through my mother having [breast] cancer, my father almost dying from a bike accident, and now it's my brother who's my best friend. I lost it."
But she didn't let herself off the hook that easily. "It's not an excuse... I'm an adult and I have to be held responsible for my own actions," she qualified.
Kelly has a history of alcohol and drug abuse, and has been to rehab four times (most recently in 2009). Though she has stopped using drugs, she still considers herself a social drinker.
"The way I live my life after going to rehab is not the way most people do," she told the website. "I still drink and I've always said that. I do have the occasional drink. I'm not using [drugs], I haven't. I won't. I'm not going to do that." Still, she admits she had a moment of panic on the plane when she realized she was drunk, wondering, "Is this really happening to me all over again?"
"I'm not a liar," Kelly adamantly told Radar. "I can't go out there and be one of those starlets who's drinking vodka in a water bottle thinking no one knows."
It sounds like Kelly's breakdown was an understandable lapse brought on by stress. The fact that she can acknowledge that bodes well for her future sobriety. Moreover, it's a big deal when any celebrity can admit that they've screwed up. There's an entire industry of publicists and managers who are devoted to covering up stars' dumb mistakes, especially the ones that would conflict with their public image. It would have been easy for Kelly to deny the story; admitting it was a much more courageous choice. Let's all raise a virgin margarita in her honor, shall we?
