Kelly Preston: "Nobody Should Have to Lose a Child"

The actress opens up about the grief she felt when her son died and reveals how she's learned to live again

Kelly Preston survived the unthinkable. In January 2009, the actress and her husband John Travolta faced the death of their 16-year-old son Jett while vacationing in the Bahamas together.

More than three years -- and a new baby -- later, Preston, 49, opened up on Lifetime's The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet and discussed the profound grief of outliving one of her children.

"I've had enormous loss. Nobody should have to lose a child. It's unfathomable," The Casino Jack actress said. "But I'm here to say that you can get through it. You can live again. You can want to live again."

Preston, whose baby Benjamin is nearly 18 months old, told de Cadenet that support from family, friends and fans has helped carry her through her grief.

"People were so beautiful -- so, so extraordinary from all over the world," she said. "Everybody grieves in their own way. I felt at times like I was drowning. It felt like a sea of wet blankets. And then I just peeled them off, layer by layer, so that I can now say, 'I want to live. I love life. My life is beautiful and amazing."

The interview, which aired Thursday, was broadcast amid husband Travolta's lawsuit scandal against four masseurs who claim the actor sexually harassed them during scheduled in-room massages.
