Say what you will about Britney Spears’ ex-husband Kevin Federline. But at the time the pop princess married Federline in 2004, he was a fit, handsome ladies’ man.
However, recent tabloid stories have shown the 31-year-old go from foxy to paunchy. So what’s up with the former dancer's double-digit weight gain? It almost seemed as though Federline packed on the pounds overnight.
It's no surprise, then that VH1's Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp recruited the aspiring rapper. Now a contestant on the show, which airs Feb. 8, Federline says his 2006 divorce from Spears, 28, triggered depression, which then led to overeating.
"Once you get depressed, you don't really feel like doing anything," Federline tells Access Hollywood. "You're kind of discouraged about yourself and then the weight gain too, or that makes me more depressed… I mean, it's a combination of all of those things."
Federline adds that it didn’t help to have his relationship drama played out on a public stage. “Everybody knows what happened with me and Brit,” he said. “I’m not going to say that’s the total cause of it but, I mean, just not being happy with myself was probably the main part of my depression.”
When asked if he has gotten to a place where he can be friends with Spears -- with whom he has two sons (Sean, 4, and Jayden, 3) -- Federline said he has.
"Yeah, I mean, I think as time goes on, it keeps getting better and better and better," he said about Spears. "I mean, I’m really happy the way that my life is going right now, I really am... I think, you know, I have come a long way. All of us have... my whole family. It’s gotten so much better from where we were."
As for where his famous ex-wife is in her life, now that her father has taken control of her financial affairs, Federline says things are all good: "I’m really happy for her."
