Kevin Smith, director of low-budget cult comedy classics like Clerks and Chasing Amy, has a new movie coming out that even your grandmother will want to see. Get this: It's a buddy comedy about two cops, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. And it's called...
Well, that part's still up in the air.
The working title of the film, one that Smith fought for, was A Couple of Dicks. "Dicks", of course, is slang for detective -- among other things. Initially, Smith thought that he could get around the censors on a spelling technicality, using the actual police acronym for Detective in Charge: A Couple of D.I.C.S.
But his ploy failed. Smith announced on his super-popular Twitter feed that "The Movie Formerly Known as A Couple of Dicks has finally settled on a (network-policy-dictated) replacement title!" He's not permitted to give details yet, but he says that the new title "makes him smile." So it can't be all bad.
Kevin Smith's last film, Zack and Miri Make a Porno starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, was also smacked down by censors before its release. The subtle-but-suggestive promo ads were dropped when the MPAA disapproved, and hastily replaced by this stick-figure drawing. Networks got skittish too, refusing to air the word "porno" in commercials -- and leaving viewers very confused about the movie's plot.
The trailer for the new flick comes out Christmas day, preceding Sherlock Holmes. And while you're waiting for that, Vulture reminds us that Tracy Morgan already made a film like this... in the universe of 30 Rock.
