Kevin Spacey has played many a villain, from his breakthrough role as a serial killer in Se7en to his recent turn as evil tycoon Lex Luthor in Superman Returns. Does that mean he's a bad guy in real life?
Peter Turner thinks so. The Rhode Island waiter was fired this week, and he says it's Spacey's fault. In a video interview with Radar Online yesterday, Turner alleged that Spacey and his friends were smoking in the restaurant -- a violation of Rhode Island's statewide smoking ban. He claims he asked them to put out the cigarettes no fewer than three times: first politely, then jokingly ("You're not allowed to smoke in here unless you're on fire"), then more sternly. The third time, still-smoking Spacey allegedly responded, "You know, you're an aggressive prick. I need you to get the f*** away from my table."
The waiter was later reprimanded by his boss for "pissing off Kevin Spacey," then fired a few days later by phone.
So Kevin Spacey's a jerk, huh? Don't speak too soon!
Also yesterday, it was revealed that Spacey gave a young filmmaker a giant check to jump-start his career. Via his movie-networking Web site Trigger Street, Spacey granted $50,000 to director Jason Musante Klein, who submitted a short film to compete for the award. In addition to Spacey, the judging panel included Sacha Baron Cohen, Judi Dench, James Blunt and Laurence Fishburne.
So which is the real Kevin Spacey: the generous guy who gives money to broke filmmakers or the insensitive jerk who gets waiters fired? Spacey has a reputation for being enigmatic about his personal life, so your guess is as good as ours. Regardless, we'll be looking forward to his performance in The Men Who Stare at Goats, opening this Friday.
