The Latest School Scandal? The Geico "Hump Day" Camel

Geico's new 'Hump Day' commercial sure spoke to the middle school set -- but teachers and principals aren't too happy about it.

When Geico started running a commercial featuring an excited camel making its way through a maze of office cubicles on a Wednesday asking totally over-it employees what day it is, we wonder if execs had any idea its “happier than a camel on hump day” tagline would not only become part of the company’s most-shared ad ever, spawning a slew of parodies, but also cause kids to be sent to the principal’s office.

With nearly 16 million views on YouTube, the commercial has proved especially popular among children. So popular, in fact, that at Vernon Center Middle School in Vernon, Ct., it’s causing disruption in classrooms, WFSB reports.

"Everybody's walking around in the hallways and saying its hump day in that weird voice," student Brooke Lewis tells the station, who adds that it happens every day, not just Wednesdays. "Sometimes it’s the counting down to when it is," she tells WFSB.

Dr. Mary P. Conway, the superintendent of schools, tells the station there is no official ban on the phrase, although kids have been sent to the office for uttering it, and that teachers would just like it to go away.

But that doesn’t appear to be happening any time soon. Geico hump day parodies are all over YouTube. From one family recreating the ad scene by scene to a Geiko hump day remix to a little girl in her car seat reciting the dialog to pro sports team like the Dallas Mavericks and Colorado Rapids creating their own versions, “Hump day! Whoot whoot!” is sticking around.

Middle schoolers (albeit in weird camel voicea) have spoken.
